MusicXML primarily models a document - a musical score - rather than an abstraction of a document. This makes the format easier to read and understand than those that use either non-musical names or cryptic abbreviations, making the format better suited for archival use. MusicXML’s element and attribute names are based on the English-language musical terms used in the USA. The basic musical organization mapped smoothly to the music representation of popular music notation editors such as Finale and Sibelius. Our initial implementations confirmed that MuseData was indeed a good starting point for MusicXML’s design. MusicXML extended these designs to support popular as well as classical music, including tablature, guitar chord diagrams, and percussion notation. The basic organization of musical structure comes from the MuseData format ( Hewlett, 1997), with additional ideas from the Humdrum format ( Huron, 1997). MusicXML models common Western music notation using concepts and vocabulary that are familiar to Western musicians. Over-abstraction was a fundamental reason why the earlier Standard Music Description Language (SMDL) format ( Sloan, 1997) was never adopted. This is important for getting a format widely implemented, as most music notation software developers are musicians themselves ( Good, 2006a). This makes the markup much more musician-friendly than is possible in more abstract, general-purpose languages. MusicXML reflects these commonalities and boundaries of musician experience. Most performers who read Western sheet music cannot read early or non-Western music. MusicXML does not represent earlier Western music in its original notation, nor does it represent non-Western music. The format needed to support a wide range of Western music of commercial and artistic interest, in a way that was practical for contemporary music notation applications to use. Since MusicXML was being developed by Recordare, a commercial company, the focus was relentlessly practical. MusicXML represents music from the 17th century onwards, including guitar tablature and other music notations used to notate or transcribe contemporary popular music. MusicXML was designed to be the MP3 equivalent for digital sheet music. But MIDI loses a great deal of information when representing music notation ( Selfridge-Field, 1997). The only way to share sheet music files between applications was with Standard MIDI Files. Instead, each application had its own proprietary format. However, there was no standard format for music notation that compared to the MP3 format for audio. Digital sheet music retail sites like Sunhawk were also starting to appear. MusicXML’s design and development began in 2000, when Internet audio applications were coming into widespread use. These applications include the display and editing of music notation, the playback and editing of a performance of a musical score, musical analysis, and music retrieval. It is designed so that a single XML file can be used by a wide range of music software applications. MusicXML is a universal interchange and distribution format for common Western music notation. The development and history of MusicXML is described in this chapter. MusicXML is supported by over 160 applications. MusicXML was developed by Recordare and can represent music from the 17th century onwards, including guitar tablature and other music notations used to notate or transcribe contemporary popular music. MusicXML’s design and development began in 2000, with the purpose to be the MP3 equivalent for digital sheet music. There are also a couple of nice cameos by Bill Murray, which made me smile. So many bands sound like s**t away from their producers and over processed sound, but Pearl Jam was born to be a live band, and this film perfectly captures that sentiment. Pearl Jam is one of those musical acts that go beyond anything they do in the studio when they step out on stage in front of a crowd of thousands. I’m a fan of Pearl Jam though, so I loved the s**t out of this movie. It’s a gorgeously shot concert film, but still…not much here for non-fans. There’s not a whole lot of appeal to anyone else. I think this film will only appeal to three kinds of people people who love baseball (specifically the Cubs), people who love Pearl Jam, and people who love both. “It’s one part artful concert film and one part love letter to baseball…” This is what this movie is about, capturing those feelings of fandom. There’s this amazing scene where they mix footage and audio of the Cubs qualifier game for entry into the World Series with Pearl Jam’s amazing song “Corduroy” and it’s such an energizing feeling. We get an in-depth look at what it took to break the legendary curse the Cubs have been suffering from for ages. You feel the pain of what it meant to be a longtime Cub’s fan during their abysmal losing streaks, and what this past season championship win means to them. The documentary is also peppered with old footage from 1992 of Eddie Vedder visiting his old stomping grounds at the genesis of Pearl Jam’s rise to popularity. It’s fun to see how passionate lead singer Eddie Vedder gets about the team, and I loved hearing about his personal history attending games as a child. On the other side of things, I’m not a big sports fan, and I only have a very passive interest in baseball, but the film throws out a ton of interesting facts about Wrigley Field and the history of the Chicago Cubs. I’m a big fan of Pearl Jam, and I was delighted that the second song they played was “Better Man”, not only my favorite Pearl Jam song, but also one of my favorite songs of all time. It’s one part artful concert film and one part love letter to baseball and the history of Wrigley Field. I went into it blind thinking it was just going to be another music documentary about a band I love, but almost immediately it sets itself apart. Through the eyes of renowned director/photographer Danny Clinch and the voice of Pearl Jam, the film showcases the journey of this special relationship.Let’s Play Two is a strange documentary featuring the band Pearl Jam. As I mentioned, the content may not be 1:1 depending on the complexity of things added to the PC game. Yes, there will be unscheduled updates for Nomad to try to keep it in line with the content of the PCVR game. So for that reason it is not advised to install dozens of mods all at once! The only limitation Nomad has in modding is that the number of active mods you can have will be limited by the Quest 2 memory. That means modders would be making mods directly for Nomad, or that a PC modder would have to make a mod compatible with Nomad. However, do note that Quest 2 mods will be different from PCVR mods, so you couldn’t install a made-for-PC mod in Nomad and vice versa. Mods will be available a few weeks after launch, just so we can make sure the initial performance and bugs feedback is accurate and not just people having mod-induced issues. They will install the same way as PCVR and just as easily. Yes! Modding is a huge part of the Blade & Sorcery experience, so I am delighted to tell you Nomad will be able to use mods. We hope to be able to fix that and make it default at some point however. NPC wounds and blood on weapons are still experimental, and have been disabled by default as it causes a bit of lag on hit (you can enable the option at your own peril). Some of the most performance-heavy PCVR Dungeon rooms are omitted. There is a lower limit to the max number of enemies you can have on screen compared to PCVR. The team did an insanely good job on optimization and I think it is one of the best looking Quest 2 games out there.Īs mentioned, the Citadel map is missing for now. The balance was making it look as good as possible before performance became an issue. Nomad graphics are optimized for the Quest 2, so obviously not as detailed as PCVR. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN NOMAD AND B&S PCVR? Crazy!Īll weapons, spells and sandbox arenas from PCVR U10 are included, with the exception of the Citadel map. Currently Nomad has just about everything the PCVR game has.Īt launch, Nomad will have almost all of the features and content of the PCVR game version “U10 Dungeons Update.” That means you can play Dungeons on this Quest 2 version. However, the team is working crazy hard and smart to get Nomad as close to the PCVR version as humanly possible. Instead, we prefer to make exactly the PCVR game we want to, and then optimize things for Nomad and/or omit anything that is not yet possible for the Quest 2 tech-wise.įor this reason you should know that Nomad may not have everything that the PCVR game has nor will have in the future if there is a technical limitation for adding it to the Quest 2, then there is nothing that can be done. If they were the same title, then the PCVR version would be limited in scope by the Quest 2 capabilities, and we didn’t want that. Similarly, we wanted to distinguish they are separate titles so that we can reserve the right to steam ahead with PCVR development without restriction. The reason for splitting the titles like this, rather than just making it all the same game, is we did not want to reduce the PCVR game’s quality in order to force Blade & Sorcery to work on the Quest 2. But because Nomad is optimized for the Quest 2, some things are different from the PCVR game, for example, graphics. This means a person without a powerful PC can play a version of Blade & Sorcery that is optimized directly for their headset, to ensure they have a nice time with performance and so forth. Yes! It is very important that we get this message across: Blade & Sorcery: Nomad is a separate standalone title from the PCVR version. We didn’t want to make any promises until we were 100% sure that it was technically possible, wouldn’t disrupt the PCVR development time, and was a decent version of the game. Well, you know how we always say we are from the school of underpromise and overdeliver? Well we ain’t kidding! I’m sure a lot of you are open jawed right now, because we spent 3 years saying it probably wouldn’t happen and now here it is, lol. Blade & Sorcery: Nomad is a standalone version of B&S optimized for the Oculus Quest 2, and it comes out in a few days… The physics-based sword and sorcery sandbox will be available in the Quest Store on November 4th.
